Delhi or Agra?
These cities do not compete — they do different jobs. The real question is whether you sleep in Agra or day-trip from Delhi.
Short answer: Sleep in Agra for one night if you can. It is the only way to reach the Taj Mahal at opening, which is the difference between the monument you imagined and a crowded one. Delhi is the better base for everything else: more flights, far better hotels and food, and Mughal sites that need a full day of their own.

Does a Delhi Day Trip to the Taj Mahal Work?
It works, and thousands do it daily. It is also the version of the Taj Mahal most people are slightly disappointed by, and the reason is timing rather than the monument.
A day trip from Delhi means departing between 6 and 7am at best, arriving in Agra around 10 or 11am. That is exactly when the crowd peaks and the light is at its harshest. You will see the Taj Mahal; you will not see the one in the photographs.
The exception is the Gatimaan Express, which leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin early and reaches Agra in about 100 minutes. It is the only day-trip option that gets you there before the worst of it.
One night in a mid-range Agra hotel often costs less than the premium you pay for a rushed day trip — and it buys you the sunrise slot. On value alone, staying over usually wins.
How to Split Your Days

Arrive Delhi, rest and adjust. Long-haul arrivals are usually late at night, so do not schedule anything for the next morning.

Full day in Delhi: Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar in the morning, Old Delhi and Chandni Chowk in the afternoon.

Travel to Agra in the afternoon by train or car. Agra Fort on arrival if there is light left.

Taj Mahal at opening. This is the morning the whole trip is built around.

Onward to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri, or back to Delhi if Agra is the end of the trip.

Stay in Delhi for arrival, departure and a full day of Mughal sites, but sleep one night in Agra. That single night is what gives you access to the Taj Mahal at opening, when the crowds are lightest and the light is best.
Is a day trip from Delhi to the Taj Mahal worth it?
It is workable but compromised. Leaving Delhi at 6am puts you at the Taj Mahal around 10 or 11am, the busiest and harshest-lit part of the day. If a day trip is your only option, take the Gatimaan Express, which arrives far earlier than driving.
How far is Delhi from Agra?
About 230km. The Yamuna Expressway takes roughly 3 to 4 hours by car. The Gatimaan Express covers it in about 100 minutes, making it the fastest option.
How many days do you need in Delhi?
One full day covers the essentials — Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar and Old Delhi. Two days lets you add museums, Lodhi Gardens and a proper food walk without rushing.
Is Delhi or Agra better for hotels?
Delhi, clearly. It has strong options in every category including genuine luxury. Agra's range above mid-tier is limited, which is another reason most travellers stay only one night there.
