I guide tourists through the Taj Mahal every month of the year. In January I wear a jacket at 6am. In May I watch visitors turn back from the marble at 10am because the heat makes it impassable. The difference between a great India trip and a miserable one often comes down to timing. This guide is what I tell every client before they book.

Best Time by Region

Golden Triangle

Delhi · Agra · Jaipur

Best:October – March
Peak:December – February
Avoid:May – July

North Indian plains have extreme summer heat (40–46°C May–June) and monsoon flooding (July–September). October to March is the window — cool, dry, and clear. December fog in Agra can obscure the Taj Mahal at dawn, but by 8–9am it lifts. November and February are the sweet spots within this window.

Rajasthan

Jaipur · Jodhpur · Jaisalmer · Udaipur

Best:October – March
Peak:November – February
Avoid:April – June

Desert temperatures in Jaisalmer reach 48°C in May. The winter window (October–March) is ideal across all four cities. Udaipur's lakes are fullest after monsoon (October), making October and November particularly beautiful. Camel safaris in the Thar Desert are only comfortable October to February.

Varanasi

Ganges · Ghats · Sarnath

Best:October – March
Peak:November – February
Avoid:May – June (extreme heat)

Varanasi follows the same season as the Golden Triangle. October to March gives cool mornings on the ghats — ideal for the dawn boat ride, which is the reason to come. Avoid May and June, when the city sits above 43°C and the riverfront offers no shade.

Practical Planning Notes

1

December fog in Agra

Between late November and mid-January, morning fog rolls off the Yamuna River and can completely obscure the Taj Mahal at sunrise. By 8–9am it typically clears. If a Taj Mahal sunrise is important to you, visit October/November or February/March instead of December.

2

Book Diwali carefully

Diwali (October/November, dates vary annually) is spectacular but Jaipur and Agra hotels fill months ahead. Air quality in Delhi drops sharply post-Diwali due to fireworks — if you have respiratory sensitivities, time your Delhi stay before Diwali.

3

Holi — brilliant or chaotic depending on preference

Holi (February/March) is one of India's most visually extraordinary festivals. It is also extremely physical — you will be covered in coloured powder. Some clients love it; others find it overwhelming. Decide in advance and plan accordingly.

4

Christmas/New Year pricing

December 20 – January 5 is the most expensive window of the year. Heritage hotels in Agra and Jaipur can be 3–4x their standard rate. Book 6 months ahead minimum and confirm with us directly for best availability.

5

Flying from AU/CA — check connections

From Sydney and Melbourne, most India routes connect via Singapore (SQ) or Dubai (EK). From Canada, Toronto connects via London or Doha. Factor in the connection time when planning your first/last day at sights.
