Booking an India Tour from Abroad
Most of my guests book from another continent. Here is the honest trade-off between a home-country agency and booking direct.
Short answer: A home-country agency buys you legal recourse and someone in your time zone — worth real money on a first trip. Booking an Indian operator direct is typically 30–50% cheaper for the same ground arrangements, because home-country agencies subcontract to Indian operators anyway. The deciding question is whether you want financial protection or flexibility.
What a Home-Country Agency Actually Adds
An agency in New York, London or Sydney selling India tours almost never owns vehicles or employs guides in Agra. They contract an Indian ground operator, add margin, and wrap it in their own terms. The guide meeting you at the Taj Mahal is local either way.
What the margin buys is genuine, though. In the UK, package holidays sold by a UK company carry statutory protection so your money is refunded if the company fails. Australian and US consumer law offers different but real recourse. Booking direct with an operator abroad gives you none of that — your protection is your card issuer's chargeback window.
The second thing you buy is a phone number in your own time zone. India is 9.5–10.5 hours ahead of the US mainland and 4.5–5.5 ahead of the UK. If something goes wrong at 2am your time, that gap is real.

A middle path most travellers miss: book flights and the first two hotel nights through a protected channel at home, and arrange guiding and ground transport direct. You keep protection on the expensive, hard-to-replace parts and flexibility on the rest.
Practicalities from Abroad
Paying an Indian operator
Wise and Revolut are the usual low-fee routes and give a paper trail. Ask for an invoice with the business name before sending anything. Avoid irreversible transfers for large sums to an individual you have not verified.
The e-Visa is your job, not the operator's
Most nationalities apply online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days and costs roughly $25–80. No legitimate operator needs to handle this for you, and none should charge a large fee to do so.
Book the season, not the dates
October to March is the North India window. November and February are the sweet spots. If you are travelling on school holidays, book 4–6 months out — the good guides in Agra are committed early for that period.
Confirm who meets you and how
Get the name and phone number of the person meeting you at the airport or hotel, in writing, before you fly. Arriving at Delhi at 1am with no confirmed contact is the most stressful way to start a trip.
