Taj Mahal Sunrise or Sunset?

Short answer: Sunrise, for almost everyone. You get thinner crowds, softer light, and cooler marble. Sunset is the better call in only two situations: you are visiting in May–June when a 5:30am start is brutal, or you specifically want the west-facing façade lit warm for photography.

The gap is widest in the first 40 minutes. Between opening and roughly 7am, you can photograph the reflecting pool with almost nobody in the frame. By 8am the same shot has thirty people in it. There is no equivalent quiet window at sunset — the crowd builds through the afternoon and never clears before closing.
When Sunset Is Genuinely Better
You are visiting in May or June
Sunrise means leaving your hotel at 5:00am in 35°C pre-dawn heat, and the site still hits 44°C by 10am. A late-afternoon visit from 4pm is more humane, and the crowd thins slightly as day-trippers leave for Delhi.
You want the warm-lit façade
The Taj faces south. At sunset the western marble takes a genuine gold cast that sunrise never produces. If that is the photograph you came for, sunset is not a compromise — it is the correct answer.
You are arriving from Delhi the same day
A sunrise slot from Delhi means a 3:00am departure. Most travellers underestimate how much that ruins the rest of the day. Sunset lets you leave Delhi at a civil hour.
The Taj Mahal is closed to tourists every Friday for prayers. This catches out more visitors than any other rule — check the day before you book anything else around it.
What Sunrise Actually Costs You
Honesty matters more than selling you the early slot. Sunrise has two real drawbacks and most guides will not mention either.
First, December and January fog. Agra sits in the Gangetic plain and winter dawn fog is common enough that some mornings the monument is a grey outline until 9am. If you are visiting in those months and only have one morning, that is a genuine gamble. Sunset in winter is much more reliable.
Second, the queue forms before the gate opens. Arriving 'at sunrise' means arriving 45 minutes before it, in the dark, to be near the front. Travellers who show up at actual sunrise walk into the crowd they were trying to avoid.
Ticket Timing and Cost
Tickets are valid for three hours from entry and are timed, so buying online the night before saves the ticket-window queue entirely. The mausoleum supplement is the only optional part, and it is worth paying — the inlay work inside is the thing photographs cannot convey.
